In general, Croatia is actually not that expensive, but like any other tourist destination in the world, here there is also “tourist traps” that can be very hard for the budget vacation. Here is how to avoid these pitfalls and reduce other overhead expenses while on holiday in Croatia.

Price of using mobile phones for calls and mobile connections in Croatia

While roaming the word must be known more or less everyone these days is always a point of extra costs which could be avoided. The typical mistake is to think that Croatia is part of the EU, and the forced reduction of calls with roaming also applies to Croatia. Guess what? Croatia is not yet in the EU and thus the forced reduction does not apply here!

In recent years the record of expenditure was that of a guy who used his mobile phone card (fixed rate) during a stay in Croatia, the final bill from the operator’s country of origin was of 31,000 EUROS – The flat rate does not Croatia! (Update: The new record is that of an Australian with a score of 37.000 Euro)

Facts

Council Budget – How to avoid the high costs of mobile phones:

1. Check the roaming rates of your service to your country of origin for Croatia before going on vacation.
2. Unplug your mailbox, even better unplug your mobile phone.
3. Use international calling cards that can be purchased at post offices and most kiosks in Croatia.
4. Use Internet cafes found in all tourist cities throughout Croatia
5. Buy a local SIM card and use it to receive calls.
6. If you bring your own laptop, you can buy a card Croatian 3G mobile data (for small amounts of data, prices are OK.)

Price of public transport, taxis, transfers, train and bus

If you can drive by or do not rent a car, but you still want to move, you have the following 4 types of ground transportation.

The second most expensive transportation transfers are booked in advance (car or minibus with driver), prices are about 1.20 to 1.50 euro per km for a driver plus 1-3 passengers. Although transfers are quite expensive, at least they have the advantage that you know the exact price in advance. – If you are a group of, say, 4-8 people, prices of such transfer from the airport are very reasonable, especially considering the time you save by taking a minibus.

Council Budget: If you are planning a holiday vacation with accommodation in private accommodation booked directly, you should always check whether the owner is willing to transfer to the airport for a nominal fee. (If yes, the savings can be considerable)

For large cities near airports you’ll have a bus traveling from the airport frequently.

Train because of the relief of Croatia, the country has no railway system completely built, the train is basically an alternative to other means of transport, when you go to Zagreb in large coastal cities such as Rijeka, Zadar and Split.

Companies offering private accommodation in Croatia can be divided into two groups.

Other useful information related to accommodation in Croatia

Sometimes there are few owners who do not follow the rules, it is not a major problem but here are some things you should know to help you avoid unpleasant surprises.

For each night tourism in Croatia the owner must pay a tax (about 1 euro / day), this procedure is usually quite simple because the owner takes care of all formalities in this regard. When booking, make sure the tax is included, otherwise ask. If an owner responds to that request, you must pay the tax directly to the police, this should trigger a home alarm, it is very likely in this case that you fell on a rental property that is illegal.

According to Croatian law, the tax must be paid for each night in Croatia (even if you are staying with friends), in principle, you can risk a fine, for example if you go to Croatia without pre-booking of rooms or without any confirmation of where you will find, in practical terms, this happens very rarely.

Sometimes agencies / owners have problems estimating distances when describing a house, it is always advisable to check on Google maps.

Eat and Drink in Croatia:

Croatia has some of the world’s largest reserves of fresh water, which means that under normal circumstances you can drink tap water without any problem.

In the restaurant you can order the tap water with ice, “voda Obicna its ledom” instead of bottled water.

Most pizzerias also serve pizza family (Jumbo Pizzas), normally you can order a pizza family with 2-4 different fillings, which is slightly cheaper than eg order 4 small pizzas

Breakfast: Instead of buying breakfast in a restaurant, you can also buy a piece of bread at the bakery and bring your favorite coffee, I’ve never seen any coffee bar owner to complain or turn people doing that, it’s the same thing when you go to a coffee bar and make drinks for children (small).

In some of the biggest cities there are nightclubs that offer very expensive champagne, you should avoid them if your budget is tight!
